You will probably hear this Turkish phrase (word) most often when you visit Turkey: Merhaba. It means “Hello.” I’ve heard it is from a root Arabic word meaning “to welcome.” I’ll link you to the sound file at Omniglot.com if you would like to hear it pronounced. The sound file also says “Selam,” and “İyi günler,” which also basically mean “hello.”

One of the first Turkish phrases you will hear when you come to Turkey is “Hoş geldiniz!” (hosh gel’-dee-neez), which means “Welcome!” I heard it from the stewardesses and pilots when we were getting off the plane. [Let me just add an aside here to say Turkish people absolutely love children. The pilot of the plane came out and pinched our little three-year-old's cheeks when we were leaving the plane.]
We also hear it when we enter someone’s home or a restaurant.
If you want to impress your host, you can reply, “Hoş bulduk,” (hosh bull’-dook), which means, basically, “came well!”–at least I’m guessing it means that.

A new Turkish online dictionary set to be launched on Sept. 26 looks like it could be a huge help to people who are learning Turkish phrases. The cool thing about it is that it will have a sound file available for each word. That’s why it is called, “Sesli Türkçe Sözlük,” which means “Turkish Dictionary with Sound”.
The dictionary is run by the Turkish Language Society (TDK). The major catch is that if the new dictionary is like the old one, the whole site is in Turkish, which is challenging for beginners like me. But hey, I’m looking forward to getting the exact pronunciation of lots of words!

Update: Here’s the link to the Sesli Türkçe Sözlük. I’m not able to get the sound to work with the browsers I use. Maybe it needs Explorer to work?! And it is all in Turkish, which will be a challenge for beginners. Go here to read about an easier to use dictionary.

Wondering if it is worth it to learn Turkish phrases? This is from an article I just read about a Dutch woman who moved to Istanbul: “I have noticed that as soon as people hear you speak Turkish you immediately get more respect.”
The woman, Anderske Kaspersma, is a professional singer who is focusing on learning Turkish before starting her own business. Ms. Kaspersma says she will have a much larger and stronger market after she masters Turkish.
“Learning to speak Turkish is necessary in order to integrate, make contacts and find work.”

Maybe you have an interest in learning Turkish phrases because you want to impress your Turkish friends. Maybe you are going to visit Turkey. I’m interested because I moved to Turkey recently and made it my home. In any case, Turkey is a fascinating place and the people here are wonderful.
Some people have said the Turkish language is very complicated, but I haven’t found it to be so. In fact, English is a very complicated language but we native speakers often don’t realize it. We grew up listening and speaking what we heard. Basic Turkish phrases can be learned easily as well. Just like anything, it takes practice.
I have an advantage when it comes to learning Turkish because I live around Turkish speakers. I hear Turkish every day-even though I still don’t understand most of it. My recommendation for those elsewhere is to get ahold of a good program to listen to the language. You can memorize key Turkish phrases fairly quickly and painlessly.
