You will probably hear this Turkish phrase (word) most often when you visit Turkey: Merhaba. It means “Hello.” I’ve heard it is from a root Arabic word meaning “to welcome.” I’ll link you to the sound file at Omniglot.com if you would like to hear it pronounced. The sound file also says “Selam,” and “İyi günler,” which also basically mean “hello.”

It sounds to me as if the sound file at Omniglot.com pronounces lyi gunler as: ee gun ash. Am I hearing wrong or is it possible they are pronouncing a different word?
I think your blog site is going to be very helpful. Thanks!

CharlieThumb,
I just went back and listened to it again and you’re right, it does sound funny at the end. It’s just a quirk in the recording though. You really should say “ler” at the end (like “lair” and roll the “r”).
